Round Trusses - Why They Are So Popular

A round truss is an architectural solution for the use of single or multiple round ribs, which sit on the outside of a window sill, and to the floor. These trusses are constructed by having panels that are separated by strips of lumber.

Round trusses are one of the oldest forms of trusses available to architects and predate the use of the more modern form, the cantilever truss. The earliest trusses were circular in shape. A couple of things make these trusses less efficient than the cantilever truss, but a significant number of houses in older homes and in areas that experience earthquakes use these types of trusses to install the veneer panels, to sit on the outside of the window sill. Because the slats do not touch each other, they create a sealed opening between the slats that does not permit moisture to seep in and to get out.

Round trusses that are made of two rectangular sections are also known as cantilever trusses. These are not as efficient as the round truss, in the same sense that the cantilever truss is not as efficient as the cantilever door frame.

As mentioned earlier, the round truss is the most common type of truss used today. Using round trusses is more complicated than most houses with the use of cantilever trusses, because they are built in layers. A few popular choices are for those that are going to have rectangular slats, or triangular slats. The rectangular type of slats is usually a truss which are built on either side of the window, and the triangular style is built on the inside of the rectangular window.

Since round trusses are almost always divided into two tiers of slats, a door frame can be easily constructed using a circular section of plastic that is tapered to a custom angle. This allows the door frame to be moved inside of the slats to add more stability to the door but does not add any extra weight to the frame itself.

Round trusses also have other uses in other applications. One is in the home construction industry and allows for a more efficient, more elegant room dividers. The use of a truss to divide a room is more expensive than using a unit, but in many cases, is not nearly as expensive. A regular home owner would be able to build a unit, and then have the trusses installed separately by a house contractor.

Round trusses are an economical solution to many problems. The cost savings and increased strength to a construction project are significant. However, Round trusses can have another benefit in their construction, which is a strength to the home, or structural requirement, greater than cantilever trusses.
