Enhancements to the 230 Moving Head Lamp

The 230 moving head is a unique type of light source.230 moving head In the normal operation of a typical globe, the earth's rotation is used to shift the orientation of the bottom of the sphere. This movement, called the "sphere-shifting effect," is also used on a moving globe and is known as "dimming." In the case of a moving head, the earth's rotation is employed to vary the orientation of the light source, which can be a dot or a double dot, depending on the model. Thus, instead of always pointing to the north (or south, or south-and-west) as in the normal operation, a dome lens will always point to the next direction relative to the viewing angle. This has obvious advantages over the other models of globes.

The next step up in size from the basic globe is the "standard" model, and these are typically manufactured by Diehl. The major difference between these models and the 230 moving head is that the standard size is smaller than the gobos. The diehl standard has a major disadvantage, however. If the model is dropped, the sharpy light source will not be very effective since the reflectors will be too small to provide an illuminated picture.

Some companies have attempted to remedy this shortcoming by mounting additional dielectric elements in the outer edge of the sphere. This allows for a brighter image to be produced even at lower brightness. An additional bonus is that some of the extra elements can be removed from the base unit for easy storage. These models of the 230 moving head stage are available in many price ranges. For the consumer, the choice is not so simple between the different models of the same basic model.

A much-improved option is the light source manufactured by Diehl. The new light source, which is called the Electronic Ballast, is capable of producing an extremely bright light without being brighter than the standard model. Diehl Electronic Ballast products are compatible with most 230 moving head stages.

The Electronic Ballast consists of a glass bulb that projects a steady light, approximately one third as bright as the standard model. In addition, it produces a higher level of arc energy and longer arc life than its predecessors. While the overall brightness is not increased, the amount of light produced is more consistent, which means more productivity can be achieved during the same work period. The electronic ballast system of the 230 produces an incredible level of light, which surpasses even the brightest moving head stage.

The final improvement to the 230 is the use of the fully variable "On" and "Off" switch that control the amount of light emitted. The electronic ballast system provides the operator with a completely hands-free operation system that also allows for pre-discharge adjustments to accommodate different work loads. The use of this system makes it safe for use in the confines of an actual production facility. This improvement to the 230w discharge lamp also improves the quality of the image produced.
